The significance of lighting lamps and lanterns during the celebration: During Diwali, it is said that Lord Rama returned home after rescuing his wife Sita from the demon Ravana. When he came home, Lakshmi was waiting for him and his devoted brother Laxman and all of their subjects at Ayodhya in joyous welcome! Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps," which symbolizes how Lord Rama brought backlight into people's lives by getting rid of all the demons. It is said that Diwali is an opportunity for Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, to leave her abode in the water bodies and enter people's homes through their doorsteps. Therefore, lighting lamps is a way to make sure she comes inside because you want her at your celebration!
